I heard the authors interviewed on a podcast and was impressed that I bought the audiobook immediately。 Your Brain on Art considers not only the transformative power of art, but also the science behind it。 Both making art and responding to it change the way we see, and interact with, the world, leading to a greater sense of well being and connectedness。 These ideas are some that I’m passionate about and have experienced。 The authors discuss ways in which this science-based knowledge can be appli I heard the authors interviewed on a podcast and was impressed that I bought the audiobook immediately。 Your Brain on Art considers not only the transformative power of art, but also the science behind it。 Both making art and responding to it change the way we see, and interact with, the world, leading to a greater sense of well being and connectedness。 These ideas are some that I’m passionate about and have experienced。 The authors discuss ways in which this science-based knowledge can be applied to many areas of life, e。g。, both physical and emotional health, longevity, interior design, community, and the environment)。The audiobook was probably not the best format for this particular content。 For one thing, I’m interested in the science, but with the audio version, had no access to notes, sources, or illustrations, which was frustrating。 It’s hard to catch or remember the names of researchers when you’re listening。 I kept feeling that the content was somewhat scattered。 But maybe that was a function of listening rather than reading。 Also, I hate to be picky, but the reader’s mispronunciations were really distracting — often, mandala, futile and especially FLORE-isining — which made me think of polishing a floor, rather than finding fulfillment in life。However, I'm now going to buy this book (either paper or digital copy) and read it。 There’s a lot of important information in it。The interview is on the Art2Life Podcast, Episode 74。 Also available in video: https://www。youtube。com/watch?v=Jb8sW。。。。 Check it out! 。。。more

Not unlike Oliver Sacks Awakening’s and the effects of L-Dopa on the brain, music and art have similar effects。 From mandala to music , social and emotional skills are advanced, whereby very young children have improved academic performance as well, even as early as age 6。 Functional MRI shows how the arts amplify the function of these children across many maturation and complex learning abilities。 The FMRI demonstrates that the hippocampus area and corpus callosum areas of brain have sizes advances and changes with early art and music training。 This an outstanding book and a great read for anyone working with children , recovering from traumatic medical event , dealing with long-term neurological disease, or just interested in the power of arts and music to enhance brain function resulting in more joy, better sleep for those with insomnia , and more connection to daily life。 。。。more

This is a book about the neurological effects experiencing art have on the human body。 The chapters address mental health, physical healing, learning, what they call flourishing as well the place of arts in community。 For each topic there is a basic exposition of research in the field and then examples of arts being used for the various purposes。 I’m guessing the authors went light on the scientific explanations to avoid scaring off readers。 For myself I was hoping for more focus on the science。 This is a book about the neurological effects experiencing art have on the human body。 The chapters address mental health, physical healing, learning, what they call flourishing as well the place of arts in community。 For each topic there is a basic exposition of research in the field and then examples of arts being used for the various purposes。 I’m guessing the authors went light on the scientific explanations to avoid scaring off readers。 For myself I was hoping for more focus on the science。 There are extensive notes with which on might delve more deeply with the time and access to the sources, but it would be great if more of the information was in the book itself。 The science exists and is growing in stature, but the heavy advocacy for the programs using these findings was offputting。 The concluding chapter came across as utopian。 My annoyance with style is an individual reaction。 There is good information here and it can be used in arguing the usefulness of the arts。 Thanks to Random House and NetGalley for an advanced copy。 。。。more

Your Brain on Art: How the Arts Transform Us, the new book by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross, and published by Penguin Random House, is an attempt to help readers move past manufactured pessimism and move toward a truthful understanding of how important the arts are to their mental, spiritual, professional, and physical well-being。The concepts readers have to focus on, according to Magsamen and Ross, are that of neuroaesthetics (focused) and neuroarts (broader), terms used that speak to how the arts are not just a form of escape but are ways to change our day-to-day mental and physical health needs for the positive。 According to the writers, if we develop more of an aesthetic mindset filled with curiosity, playfulness, creativity, open-mindedness, and exploration, our senses will be heightened, our memory will become enhanced, our feelings and emotions will be calmed down, and our brains will be able to function better (among other things)。 In essence, we will get what we desire: again, health and happiness。 Thus, much of Your Brain on Art, which is admittedly dense with a combination of scientific information about the human brain and body and how various forms of artistry affect those inner workings, speaks to the ways we can have complete agency over how we live our lives, if we just embrace the arts。Even if it is a bit heavy, Magsamen and Ross’s text is a beautiful work in that it inadvertently brings about multiple questions as to why it is that we, as a human race, no longer place emphasis on the arts if they do, in fact, make us feel better。 Schools and communities around the world are finding ways to defund or eradicate arts programs because they are either looked at as not lucrative or they are deemed as woefully unnecessary to one’s professional growth; and yet we wonder why there is a rise of violence, mental health issues, suicides, hate crimes, anti-intellectualism, etc。 A book like this argues that one of the primary reasons why the human race is in constant crisis is because we no longer prioritize what we feel, taste, see, hear, and smell。 We no longer experience the tangible in significant ways, and that leads to an unawareness that is detrimental not only physically and emotionally, but culturally and spiritually。What Your Brain on Art successfully proves is that we are meant to be social, communicative beings who need all art forms to endure and thrive and connect, even if there is a concerted effort to stifle and suppress what Magsamen and Ross see as essential to our survival as a species。 And, it is ultimately up to us to make an effort to seek these art forms out to make ourselves healthier and happier。Quill says: Your Brain on Art is an enlightening and solid work that shows readers that art, biology, and psychology come together to make us healthier and happier in our everyday world。 。。。more

Yes。 And this book offers proof。 I know the soothing effect making art can have on a person so I was excited to read more about it。 The topic here was actually much broader than I expected。 Neuroaesthetics is a word I hadn’t heard before。 This book went way beyond “painting makes you calm。” Discu “Just one art experience per month can extend your life by ten years。” Wow。 Can that be true? Can something that’s enjoyable and considered recreation actually have such a profound impact on one’s life? Yes。 And this book offers proof。 I know the soothing effect making art can have on a person so I was excited to read more about it。 The topic here was actually much broader than I expected。 Neuroaesthetics is a word I hadn’t heard before。 This book went way beyond “painting makes you calm。” Discussed were the positive effects of music, dance, architecture, nature and more。 This book was full of research studies and anecdotes。 I would’ve loved some specific ideas for projects, links to playlists, or action plans。 Maybe that was there and I missed it。 I docked a star because there was so much information here it was overwhelming。 My scattered brain could’ve used a bit more art—even charts and graphs to break up the countless stories and studies presented。 I do highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their life in an easy, enjoyable way。 I’m off to find some sources of 40Hz light and sound! After thinking about it, I realized the following:Part of it comes down to authorial voice。 Magsamen and Ross write with a breathless enthusiasm that I primarily associate with new-age gurus talking about natal charts。 The tone is excitable, twee, and earnest to the point of being uncomfortable。 Their writing is also sprinkled with vaguely new-agey sounding appeals to "ancient wisdom practices from many cultures," as well as using contemporary indigenous people as examples of "ancient" practices。 There is also an uncomfortable refusal to acknowledge that as much as art can heal us, art can also be harmful。 There is no acknowledgment in this book of art's colonial power, gentrifying power, traumatizing power, or anything else besides its' healing power。 This is not honest。In some ways, it reminded me of self-help books: a single, deceptively simple solution for immensely complex issues。 Their definition of art is flexible enough to include everything, a single soundwave in a lab can be art, but so can nature, gardening, cooking, etc。 Not to be annoying, but if your definition of art is so broad that it encompasses basically everything, then what are you actually saying?But the real downfall of this book is that it presents the glaringly obvious as new。 There is a frankly laughable portion of the conclusion that asks us to "Imagine just one day in your life where the science and practices outlined in this book come to fruition, where arts and aesthetics are seamlessly integrated。"Are you ready for this?You will。。。 have herbs in your kitchen, drink tea or coffee, sing in the shower and the car, pick up a hobby, look out your window at nature, and maybe after work go see a movie or a performance。 Revolutionary。 Why has no one thought of that before? 。。。more

A fascinating, in-depth treatise on the necessity of art, its critical role in our evolution as a species。 The book largely focuses on how art can be used not only to promote physical, emotional & mental well-being, but also how art can quite literally save us。An expansive read—I especially found the sections that minutely described how our brains process different art forms to be especially fascinating。
